Orgia dos ricos - foi com estas palavras que activistas ingleses contra os cortes nos serviços públicos interromperam uma sessão de leilão da Sotheby

Mais de 100 activistas ingleses manifestaram-se contra os cortes nos apoios sociais e na prestação de serviços públicos, alguns deles interromperam uma sessão de leilão da conhecida casa Sotheby’s, enquanto outros permaneceram na rua junto às instalações onde decorria aquele leilão, em protesto pela política de cortes que está a ser seguida pelo governo conservador e liberal inglês

Lá dentro, os activistas simularam ruídos e murmúrios de teor sexual erguendo um cartaz onde se podia ler «Orgia dos Ricos». Cá fora, outros manifestantes simulavam um leilão dos serviços públicos ( educação, bibliotecas, etc)

Um manifestante declarou :

« We are here to expose the orgy of the rich that the Sotheby’s auctions represent. The super rich, bankers and collectors who buy this art exist in an international bubble of their own and don’t seem at all affected by the so-called ‘austerity’ of the government. They commodify creativity and Sotheby’s helps them ferret away their goods by offering creative accounting services such as ‘obtaining conditional exemption’»

Os 30 milhões de libras obtidos nesta sessão de leilão de obras e arte da Sotheby’s daria, segundo o mesmo manifestante, apara pagar 1389 novos professores, 1765 enfermeiros, correspondendo ao orçamento de 150 bibliotecas.

Os manifestantes eram maioritariamente estudantes, artistas e criativos e num texto público podia-se ler os seus objectivos:

«We are fighting back against the most aggressive attacks on the public sector in living memory. We are in solidarity with the other sectors fighting against cuts and openly welcome co-ordinated creative action to oppose the selling off of our public services, the demise of the welfare state, the speculative valuation of art and the orgy of the rich.»
